"The local historian Artemiusz Wołczyk poetically wrote that 'The only thing that the Jews of Bodzentyn left behind was the cemetery ...’ In fact, there was nothing left but emptiness. Not until recently. I believe it is our moral duty to remember the Jewish community and let known about our common history. The gate at the cemetery will help us never to forget."
Jan Pałysiewicz, chairman of the Dawid Rubinowicz Society.
On September 28, 2008 Dr Leszek Sikorski, who is also a member of the Dawid Rubinowicz Society, conducted a mass in commemoration of the victims of the Holocaust connected to Bodzentyn. Leszek Sikorski is the local parish priest of Bodzentyn. His mind was set to start cleaning the grounds of the Jewish cemetery after a visit at Yad Vashem in 2005.
Current and future projects
During 2009 the Society performed a series of workshops with students at a local secondary school. In these the students became acquainted with local Jewish history and tradition through books and films. Several students then participated in workshops cooking Jewish food, and some studied the Diary by means of pantomime.
In 2010 the Society plans to publish a new edition of the Diary as well as a set of teaching materials prepared by Robert Szuchta, who is a renowned author and history teacher in Poland. The Dawid Rubinowicz Society is also set to build a training centre in the near future.
The project of renovating the Jewish cemetery continues. There are plans to create small paths and make arrangements for seating (benches). Also the Society considers creating an exhibit inside the wall of the gate, a small gallery of photographs portraying Bodzentyn in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
